Julia Goerges is a player on the rise very quickly at the moment. Goerges defeated Caroline Wozniacki for the second time in two weeks at the Madrid Open. Goerges ended up making the semifinals of the event where she lost to Victoria Azarenka.
Goerges has seen her ranking go from 75th to 25th in the past year and all of this and she is only 22 years of age.
It has been reported that Serena Williams’ stalker has been arrested in Florida. Patenema Ouedraogo, 40, was arrested near Williams’ home in Palm Beach Gardens and charged with stalking and cyber-stalking.
Williams’ attorney said a restraining order had been sought against Ouedraogo, but he could not be found so it was never served.
Ouedraogo had reportedly tried to approach Williams four times since October, including on April 15 when he showed up to a radio station in Hollywood, Florida where she was appearing.
Ouedraogo’s bond has been set at $25,000 and a judge ordered him to stay at least 500 feet (152 metres) away from Williams.
Bernard Tomic and Casey Dellacqua are the two lucky Australians who will receive wildcards into this years French Open maindraw. These wildcards are given out as a reciprocal agreement between the Australian and French Tennis Federations.
It will be very interesting to see if Tomic (only 18 years old) can grab some success on the clay at Roland Garros. While Dellacqua has been on the comeback after a year full of injuries.
At this years French Open there will be a lot of female players with great opportunities to impress, but it still seems that the Australian men aren’t holding up their end of the bargain.
Julia Goerges has had an amazing week as she won her first career title at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. Goerges’ prize for the tournament is $111,000 plus a Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet valued at $112,900.
Julia had to overcome world number one Caroline Wozniacki in the final 7-6 6-3 to claim the title.
It was amazing to see an unseeded player play so well and capture a top WTA title.
Most professional tennis players spend more time on planes than anyone else. Recently in Dubai, Victoria Azarenka took that flying experience to another level. Azarenka jumped in an Emirates A380 simulator at the Emirates Training College.
Justine Henin recently announced her retirement from professional tennis (for the 2nd time) and already there are doping rumours spreading.
In a farewell press conference, the newly-retired former World No. 1 from Belgium rued her bad luck and confronted those who spread rumors of her allegedly doping.
“I regard ending my career more like a sentence that’s been handed down than a decision I’ve made,” said Henin, who retired for the second time because of elbow problems. “I’ve had to deal with a lot of injuries throughout my career but this time, at 29, I just can’t go on. You have to be reasonable about things. When I came back from Australia, I had consultations with three different doctors. The will is there, but physically I can’t do it. It got to the point that I needed 10 minutes in the morning just to get my elbow functional. The ligament wasn’t solid enough to handle the intensity of the game. For me, it’s like a sentence. Now I have to mourn the end of my career.”
