Bernard Tomic and Casey Dellacqua Receive French Open Wildcards

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

Bernard Tomic and Casey Dellacqua are the two lucky Australians who will receive wildcards into this years French Open maindraw. These wildcards are given out as a reciprocal agreement between the Australian and French Tennis Federations.

It will be very interesting to see if Tomic (only 18 years old) can grab some success on the clay at Roland Garros. While Dellacqua has been on the comeback after a year full of injuries.

At this years French Open there will be a lot of female players with great opportunities to impress, but it still seems that the Australian men aren’t holding up their end of the bargain.

Alexandr Dolgopolov Produces Match of His Life to Beat Robin Soderling

Monday, January 24th, 2011

Alexandr Dolgopolov has produced the result of the Australian Open so far. Dolgopolov put out Robin Soderling is a brilliant five set match, 1-6 6-3 6-1 4-6 6-2. Dolgopolov will now face Andy Murray in the quarter finals.

I remember watch Dolgopolov play at the Wimbledon junior even a few years ago and I cant believe how much he has improved!

Sam Querrey and Nikolay Davydenko Make Quick Exits at Australian Open 2011

Monday, January 17th, 2011

There has been some great matches on the first day of the Australian Open 2011. For me there were two match results that stuck out from the crowd. Florian Mayer def. Nikolay Davydenko (23) – 6-3 4-6 7-6 6-4 and Lukasz Kubot def. Sam Querrey (18) 5-7 6-2 3-6 6-1 8-6.

Davydenko was completely out of sorts today and never really bough his A game to Melbourne Park. However, Kubot played an amazaing match and pushed out a fighting Sam Querrey. I had the pleasure of playing juniors with Kubot and he probably the only guy that is taller and has a bigger serve than Sam Querrey on tour!

Top 100 Men and Top 98 Women To Make up Australian Open Field

Friday, December 17th, 2010

The top 100-ranked men in the world and top 98 women are scheduled to play at next month’s Australian Open, giving the first Grand Slam of the year one of its best-ever fields.

Top-ranked Rafael Nadal will attempt to win his fourth straight major, while defending champion and No. 2 Roger Federer is chasing his fifth Australian Open title.

Women’s No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki will attempt to win her first Grand Slam title, while two-time champion and 2010 winner Serena Williams is the notable omission from the top 100 due to a foot injury.

The Australian Open is scheduled for Jan. 17-30 at Melbourne Park.

The 104 direct acceptances into the men’s draw include U.S. Open-winner Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina and Dmitry Tursunov of Russia, both with injury-protected rankings.

The women’s draw includes 107 direct acceptances, minus Elena Dementieva of Russia, who retired at the end of the season, and No. 37 Agnes Szavay of Hungary, who is injured.

“To have the top 104 players in the world in the men’s main draw is incredible and shows the high esteem with which the Australian Open is held in world tennis,” tournament director Craig Tiley said in a statement Saturday.

“The women’s field also has every available top player in the world. The players vote with their feet and they are doing it again.”

The men’s field will be completed by 16 qualifiers and eight wild cards, while the women’s field has 12 qualifiers and eight wild cards to be added.
